January, 2006

The final championship match for the 2nd Himalaya Champions Trophy- Inter-City Inter School Cricket Tournament for Boys under-15 concluded on 24th January. The finals saw a well-matched clash between Bhavan High School, Hyderabad and Salwan Boys School, Delhi. Salwan Boys School emerged champions of the Himalaya Chyavanprasha Cup 2006. The final league matches, which commenced in Bangalore from 19th January to 24th January 2006, saw schools from Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Jharkhand and UP participating in the second year of the Himalaya Chyavanprasha Cup tournament.

Salwan Boys School put on a great show. The school coach, Sanjeev Bharadwas, had put the team through a rigorous training session of a total 22 matches, just to make them match ready for the Himalaya Champions Trophy. All this effort paid off as the Salwan team beat the opposing Bhavan School by over 100 runs. The final scores stood at Salwan Boys School, Delhi, 225 for 8 in 50 overs and Bhavan's Boys School, Hyderabad were 104 for 8 in 50 overs.

At the prize distribution ceremony, former Indian wicketkeeper Sadanand Vishwanath urged the young players to stay focused, play with dedication and learn about sporting excellence from cricketing champions like Sachin Tendulkar, Roger Federer, Anil Kumble & Rahul Dravid.

The star attraction was 15-year-old Salwan boy, Surinder Dahiya, who really caught the attention of everybody for his phenomenal wicket keeping. Talking about the Chyavnprasha Cup, he said, "The Himalaya Chyavanprasha Cup really helped me better my game. I participated in the tournament last year and this year as well and I see a marked improvement in my performance. What is great about this series is that we get a lot of exposure because we compete with different schools from different cities. This is fantastic. I am now much better prepared to play the under 17 league!."
