Module 2 focused on Solutions for Pollutions. The thinking behind this module was to move beyond the educational and instructional phase into a more practical area. We wanted to encourage the students to come up with creative solutions to address environmental problems on a local scale.
Given the seriousness of air pollution in urban areas the module sought to communicate information through leaflets and workshops on the impact of pollution on health. It dealt with issues like asthma and respiratory infections, which have increased due to atmospheric pollution.
We held a street-theater competition for the students based on the theme - 'For Earth's Sake- Act Now'. This was a fantastic medium as the competition was held in a public space to ensure that the message is disseminated to a larger audience. In addition, there were essay, crosswords and photography competitions to give students a wide canvas and different mediums to express their views and voice their concerns.
Students also participated in nurturing a medicinal plant garden on their school premises. Volunteers from Christ College & Mount Carmel College planted little medicinal gardens on their college campus, which is still being looked after with a lot of care.
Narrowing down to environmental issues within their own school premises, students identified specific issues that need to be addressed immediately and worked on action plans for implementing changes. National Public School, CMR, decided to focus on the menace of plastic bags while Frank Anthony Public School talked about dealing with littering within school premises. Other solutions included promoting healthier eating amongst school children, an idea proposed by St. Johns School and Mallya Aditi International School decided to focus on composting of organic wastes on their school campus.
The actual implementation of these programs will take place in the next academic year. The fact that students are enthused about taking this initiative forward by setting right some of the environmental problems around them is a great achievement for us. The aim of this module was to inspire action from the student community & we stayed on the right track!
