Over the years, mainly because of our focus on researching nature, we have worked closely with tribes in India. This interaction has helped us gain knowledge about their lives, socio-cultural systems and more importantly their close association with the ecosystem. These tribes hold valuable knowledge about the earth and the benefits of nature. In these societies, it is the responsibility of the village elders to initiate the young into the world of hunting, gathering, foraging, tribal medicine - all of which demand a respect for the environment. The world-view of the tribal always regards man as part of nature and not independent of it.
When we formalized Himalaya & You, we wanted to take from the wisdom of these small societies and share our knowledge of the environment with the next generation.
Our vision for the program included
- Motivating youth to action on environmental issues
- Providing informed basis for their proactive efforts
- Helping students creatively communicate environmental issues
